Holy Trinity School Forest
Depaving an urban school playground in central London.
Holy Trinity Forest will replace artificial turf with native species to bring nature back at Holy Trinity School. This SUGi Pocket Forest will boost the mental and physical health of the children – many of whom have limited access to green spaces in any meaningful way – giving them the opportunity to get their hands in the soil and experience rewilding in action. The creation of a Miyawaki forest in this biodiversity desert will create an enclave where flora and fauna can thrive.
The Holy Trinity community is involved in the long-term maintenance and care of the nearby Heritage Forest - another SUGi project completed in October 2021. Holy Trinity Forest is the younger sibling to this larger project, further supporting the education and wellbeing of these students from within their school grounds.

“I feel excited because we can see more nature every day.”

“We are delighted that SUGi has chosen our school, Holy Trinity - in the heart of Chelsea - for their next rewilding project. Since I became head of Christ Church in September 2019, providing a more natural green outdoor play environment and growing opportunities for the children has been a very real priority… Many of our children have no green space at home and so learning about nature through their school experience is crucial. Giving our pupils the chance to experience the process of rewilding and to watch it thrive in their own playground is a thrilling opportunity. Furthermore, to educate the children on wildlife conservation on our doorstep and to bring together nature and community is a privilege for which we are very grateful.”
— Avis Hawkins, Head Teacher – Christ Church & Holy Trinity Federation
